New emojis celebrate professional women

New emojis celebrate professional women

Women aren’t just brides and princesses.  But you wouldn’t know that by looking through your emoji bank.

Despite the fact that more than 90 percent of the online population uses emojis to communicate, there’s still a major underrepresentation of women — but not for long.  Unicode Consortium announced today that there will be 11 new professional emojis added.  These include a teacher, farmer, rockstar and scientist.  The new additions will come in all skin tones and both male and female versions.

Google developers Rachel Been, Nicole Bleuel, Agustin Fonts and Mark Davis suggest the new emojis will nod to the diversity of women’s careers and empower girls.

“No matter where you look, women are gaining visibility and recognition as never before. Isn’t it time that emoji also reflect the reality that women play a key role in every walk of life and in every profession?

Given the fact that women are the most frequent emoji users, and that they span a wide professional spectrum not yet reflected in current emoji, we want to help address this pressing matter of equality.”

Unicode is also adding female versions to 33 existing emojis, including the running person, swimmer and weightlifter.
